“Supporting Teacher-Parent Relationships”
ANSAA Annual Meeting
November 15, 2022
Little Rock Christian Academy, Little Rock
Target Audience: Administrators
Teachers receive intensive training in child development and pedagogy, classroom management and the emotional well-being of children, but almost no training in how to communicate with parents. Independent and religious schools have just let teachers learn how to manage parents on the job; the results have been uneven at best and sometimes quite awful. How do administrators train their teachers to be more effective with parents?
Teachers need to know four things:
1) how to listen to parents
2) how to understand their anxieties
3) how to succinctly communicate the school's mission
4) how to manage irrational or attacking parents
In his presentation, based on his book with Dr. Rob Evans, Hopes and Fears: Working with Today's Independent School Parents, Dr. Thompson will guide administrators in training their faculties to work more effectively with parents.
